The test was a school-based road safety programme designed to teach us how to ride safely on public roads. An instructor (in our case PC Lapper) checked<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working brakes (front and back)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bell<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tyres properly inflated<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saddle and handlebars secure<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lights and reflectors (especially important in winter months)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helmets were not commonly worn in the 60s so not tested..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road training\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike today\u2019s playground-based training, much of the 1960s test took place on real roads near our school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We practised:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starting and stopping safely<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Looking behind without swerving<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signalling left and right<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turning at junctions<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overtaking parked cars<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Riding single file<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proper positioning in traffic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cycling Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PC Lapper observed us riding a short route. We were assessed on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Observation (looking over shoulder)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear hand signals<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Correct road position<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control and balance<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obeying road rules<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t like a modern driving test \u2014 it was firm but encouraging.
