Photokina with Sigma

I came joint first with John Dakin in an internal Jessop photography competition. The prize was a trip to Photokina…my first time visiting and a Sigma 70-210mm UC lens.

Graham Armitage organised it all and he arranged for us to meet Mr Yamaki

We stayed in the Arcade Hotel in Cologne and met Yamaki on the Sigma stand over a glass of champagne.

I got married

Today I married Jane Tupling at the Sheffield registry office.

I took the photos using a Hasselblad 500cm on self timer. This was me ready to set off from our house in Broughton Road, Hillsborough.

It was a fairly small gathering and in the evening family and friends were invited to an evening of drinking and fun at Sheffield Skating ring nr Bramall lane.

Guests from Jessops and the Co-op plus mine and Jane’s friends and family were present.

At the end of the evening I’m told we went on the rink and damaged the ice. Too drunk to remember. We divorced on 4 April 2000.

Cornwall trip

Went to Cornwall for four days after breaking up with Joanne – first solo holiday, camping in Mevagissey. Visited various stone circles and quoits. Travelled around in red VW Golf. Was in Plymouth on the 11th and sent a postcard to parents. Warm and sunny but very windy. Remember nearly falling asleep on way back. Over 1100 miles in four days.

Holiday in Umag Yugolsalvia

I was supposed to be going on holiday for the first time with my girlfriend Kath. We split up about three weeks before, so my mate Steve said he’d go with me.

yugoslavia-ticket-84

It was a 14 day holiday from 11th to 25th June. We took a few day trip excursions including a trip to Thessaloniki and a day to Venice. We also visited Postojnska Jama cave and the Lipizzan horses on their Lipica Stud Farm

We played a lot of crazy golf, drunk a lot of Grappa, and hung around with an eight year old German girl…well she hung around with us. We couldn’t keep her away. Good job we didn’t have the Jimmy Saville stigma over our heads or we may have had to hide a lot.

I got sun stroke one day and had to stay in bed.

It was my first holiday abroad, and a very enjoyable experience. I went back to Yugoslavia for my honeymoon the year before the wars broke out.

For some bizarre reason I kept all the daily menus… I will always remember the waiter with handle bar moustache who used to serve our table…and ask eeeeyze screeeeem, poooding? And the lovely cleaner who I fell in love with and decided to learn the phrase “you are beautiful”, which I still remember, but never dared say it to here…Ti si lijepa.

Also the man who used to serve chevapchichi from a hut on the beach.

We met a woman who was friends with Annie Lennox

Diamond Dogs

David_Bowie-Diamond_Dogs-cover

I queued up outside Bradley’s records in Sheffield to buy Diamond Dogs by David Bowie on its release date today. I say queued there was just me and my school mate Craig Feetham. It was his idea. He had a cassette recorded and I had a record player, so I actually bought the first copy of Diamond Dogs in Sheffield because he had to go downstairs for his. Yes very shallow, but it felt good at the time. We managed to sneak back to school after morning assembly without any bother too!

As we bought early copies we were lucky enough to get the ones with the dog’s willy on show. Later versions had this area blacked out.
