Gary Numan 02 Academy

My attention was drawn to Gary Numan back in 1979 when I heard a Lee Cooper advert with Tubeway Army’s Dont be a Dummy used as the backing track.  I bought the album on blue vinyl, limited to just 5000. Weeks later he appeared on Top of the Pops and rocketed to instant success.

I recall having an argument where I said to a good friend that he was better than David Bowie (I’d been a huge Bowie fan but this was 1979 and Bowie was drifting into his Lets Dance era). It seems I wasn’t alone – synth bands had seen him on Top of the Pops and where in awe.

His tour was something else. Huge banks of fluorescent  tube backdrops created a very black and white stage set. And he stood in the middle surrounded by geometrically aligned band members all dressed in black.

I drifted from his music after his second album, but returned a few years ago to hear a very different rock orientated synth music that was  invigorating. Taking the heaviness of bands like Deftones but using synths to provide the melodies.

Gary Numan

Last night I went to see him at the 02 Academy in Sheffield. On stage now he’s really animated – a far cry from those static cool looking poses he used to pull. The mature Numan entertains in a totally different way. And the crowd love him. He still plays a few of the old classics, Down in the Park, Cars, and Are Friends Electric, but most of the music is from newer material including tracks from the new album Splinter and takes the formula that worked so well for him into a new dimension.

Hi support band Losers, liked to tell us they were called Losers ( about five times if I counted correctly). I’d not heard them before but was  struck by how cool they were, and they performed a set with some great twists, excellent rock band. Great vocals and interesting bass treatments (including some unplanned sub bass!). Liked them so much I bought the CD at the merchandise stand.  The bass player also commented that of all the people he liked Sheffielders the most.

Hawkwind 02 Academy

Dave Brock does the rounds again with Hawkwind’s 2013 Warrier on The Edge of Time tour. The whole album played along with other Hawkwind classics including the token Silver Machine.

Good gig and lucky as they cancelled the USA part of the tour due to Dave Brock stress. I read Nic Turner has registered the name Nic Turner’s Hawkwind and Dave my end up losing the right to use the name Hawkwind.

Not sure I liked Tim Blake playing a guitar style keyboard. I feel they should be restricted to shit funk bands and Thomas Dolby. In my mind it doesn’t look all that cool for legends of rock.

Nadine Shah live

Nadine Shah live at The Harley

Nadine Shah live at the Harley Hotel & Bar, Glossop Road Sheffield…supported by David Roch and Canal Boat.

A small venue with average lighting , but great beer (and so it seems food) And the three acts were excellent. Particularly liked Cloud Boat, who each used Roland 404SX samplers to deliver some amazing sounds to blend with their interesting guitar playing.

Good review of Nadine Shah here.

She offered me a glass of red wine…very kind

For the first time ever I was almost brought to tears with the euphoric sound of one of the tracks by I Like Trains. The multi layer guitar build ups and haunting voice just took me to an emotional edge.

On the opposite end of the emotional scale probably the funniest moment in my gig life was when one of the venue staff cam on to the side of a stage in between songs with a large bucket and asked if the drummer if any one wanted ice – kinda took the edge off the band trying to be cool and all rock n roll

A top event thanks to Northern Music and Tramlines. And the City Hall for providing such a great air conditioned venue.  And of course the bands who . Top day and now I’m all rocked out.

Olafur Arnalds live at Leicester Cathedral

Olafur Arnalds live at Leicester Cathedral, booked on internet and popped down – quite a rush to get there for 8pm and he didn’t come on until 9.20pm. Atmospheric and lovely gig but annoying women in front with big hair kept obstructing my view. I moved to the left of her head she moved to the left, I moved to the right she moved to the right. GRRRR!

Managed to get a few photos although the light was pretty dire.

Back to the 80s

Martin Fry and ABC

That’s where I went last night in Clumber Park at a gig that had a line up of T’Pau, Go West, Belinda Carlisle, ABC and Human League.

Back in the 80s I’d roamed away from UK music to more obscure ambient and German rock. So 80s music doesn’t really appeal, but I went with work as a night out for the team…and, despite reservations I really enjoyed it. T’Pau were average, and only did a few songs. They were off before they’d had chance to get warmed up. Then Go West came on and got the crowd moving. Not me I’m not a Go West fan, although the singer did sound really on form. And then they did U2’s Vertigo and that rocked.

Next up Belinda Carlisle, Started off great and I mus admit to fancying her in the 80s so good to see she’s still in good form. Sadly the same couldn’t be said for her voice which started to miss notes after the third song. Nevertheless, hearing some of the classics was good, even though they were out of tune!

Then ABC. I’ve known them since the early electronic days when they were Vice Versa. Never a fan of the glitzy pop style of the 80s though. And last night they didn’t deliver to my ears. A disappointing set.

Finally headliners, Phil and the girls with Human League delivered a great set. The drum structures and synth pieces worked well to get the crowd bopping. Recognisable hits such as Don’t you want me Baby and Love Action sounded even better than I remember, and then they played Empire State Human from the first album. Giving the Girls a rest Phil sang this one alone and it was a classic moment. The highlight of the night for me.
