Quote ‘ in attribute name error

Quote ‘ in attribute name. Probable cause: Matching quote missing somewhere earlier.

I got the above error when validating a html5 page.

The problem was solved by changing

<meta charset=”UTF-8″ >

to add a closing backspace :

<meta charset=”UTF-8″ />

Hope that helps others with the same problems

Setting up a offline web environment

I’m currently setting up a home off  line web development environment and tried Xampp – I got stuck and the online help didn’t help…so I switched to WAMP and it’s going ok so far.

I’m going to use this post to add links that I find useful along the way

Creating multiple virtual hosts

This allows you to have several sites in the one location accessed from your WAMP server via Apache.  I read and followed several guides from blog posts that didn’t resolve the problem, before finding one that works.

Something’s wrong with my SEO

I mentioned a while ago that my site had slipped rankings to page 8 of Google. Well now it’s on page 13. So how come a site with the url that just has Bargh in it; and meta data with Bargh; and the keyword Bargh; and pics with alt tags of Bargh, and  the whole site content about Bargh ends up on page 13? I’m lost as to the reason. I’ve even made the whole site validated. I believe it’s either because I added a site map (maybe incorrectly) or some thing odd is going on!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Mastering the art of SEO

I’ve read loads about SEO now…and decided to have a go at making this site better optimised. It was, for a while, number one in Google when you type “Bargh”, but dropped after I made comments about a fraud company. The particular blog page was removed from Google and I have a sneaky suspicion several other pages were affected because the site fell rapidly to page two.

So lets attempt to get it back to the top where it belongs.  I made sure every page has a page title, that all the photos have alt tags, that the pages are validated, that there are enough keywords to make it really clear that this site is about me.  I created a site Map, told Google to look at this, removed the forum that had loads of spam id’s indexed, and then waited expecting to see an improvement. In less than 24 hours the site dropped to page 7 and has stayed there since! I’ve done somthing wrong and haven’t a clue, but when searching for Bargh you cannot get any more bargh than me or my personal web site so I want to be reinstated on the first page! Now!…. Please 😉
