Donna Nook

Went over to Donna Nook on the North Lincs coast. It’s seal time and there are pups everywhere! I’m told 500 born so far! It’s the first time I’d been there. If you intend visiting it’s a busy place, loads of people in the fenced area. A lens in the 50-100 region is fine for the close seals, but 300mm is needed for the more isolated seals. The sun is low at this time of year so the fence casts shadows on the close ones, you also get shadows of anyone walking past so keep an eye out. Ask your partner friend to shadow a seal if you don’t want fence patterns. A flash would be useful too on half power to fill in the harsh low lever sun.

New staff

I’ve not had chance to write anything for a while. maintaining one of these things certainly needs discipline! Been busy recruiting and have now three new members for the MPL team, Duncan, Ben and David. We’re going to revamp ePHOTOzine so it’s bang up to date with technology!

Up until all hours

Well I’m now knackered, just being putting the final touches to the personal site, and have now included the index page which means it’s finally live! There is loads still to do but I thought I’d get it up in public view. If anyone stumbles on it before I start to shout about it let me know what you think. Off to bed now. cya 🙂

Yesterday

I didn’t get chance to note anything down yesterday. It wasn’t that exciting really. I went down to Baston, Lincs, to call on Roger and Jules, the production team behind FPME. We came up with some plans to improve the magazine and web site and will actioning these in the coming weeks.

I listened to Morcheeba on the way down and Massive Attack on the way back.

An interesting day

Having had a few weeks where nothing seemed to be going right at work regarding the recruitment of a web developer, we finally found someone who cut the mustard. He starts with us on Monday. We also interviewed for a second web developer this week and he’s close to saying yes. And today we interviewed for a technical writer and gave the job to a promising person who also starts on Monday. Next week is going to be a challenge as I plan the induction program and make sure they both settle in well.

I also read an interview that David did with celeb wildlife photographer Andy Rouse, that will go live later this week and is a classic. Anyone who’s a fan will gain a real insight into his work from this ten page interview.

day two

Had another look at this blog. Trust me to pick a theme that’s in German. Spent all night trying to translate to get it looking right. Almost there now. Decided the paper, which was brown should be blue. Next thing to do is get it to fit into my web site as a blog section. Fun and games!

Getting started

It’s about time I had a blog so today I made the effort. Took a look on Google, and found WordPress which seemed to make sense! After a few failed attempts I got it installed, and here’s my first recording.

I woke up this morning to a frosty reception but the sun was out and decided to take out the new Olympus E-400 that we’ve got in for testing on ePHOTOzine. It’s a really compact DSLR smallest of its kind.

Barrow Hill, near Chesterfield seemed like a good place to go. This railway roundhouse preserves old locos and has some testing conditions for any camera. It gave me a chance to put the exposure system to its limits. You have a dark engine shed, with light streaming through large window panels, black engines and reflective paint. A challenge for any camera and it did a good job. I shot in RAW.
