New Model Soldier gig

New Model Soldier played possibly their last gig as singer David Kurley says farewell due to upcoming migration to Portugal. The band supported David’s other act, Babyshambles. Good set from both followed by a night of excellent DJ material.new model soldier

David Bowie RIP

Mourning the loss of my teen idol…and respected musician

Such a sad day today…The loss of an incredible artist, innovator, teacher, idol, all-round genius. RIP David Bowie.

David Bowie was the first artist I liked…and I became a huge fan through my teen years and starting 1972 up to 1979, buying everything he released including imports…all on vinyl there were no cds then. I used to compile scrap books of cuttings from nme, sounds, record mirror, and various girls magazines such as Jackie. I had ten scrap books, plus loads of posters, scarves, badges, the works. Through those years Bowie introduced me to a huge variety of artists and genres, and helped me discover lots of bands through these connections. He helped shape my musical taste.

I always loved the versatility and range of styles he approached, from rock to glam, to soul, to electronic. My favourite albums were Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Low. In 1979 around Lodger I started to change feelings and by the time of Lets Dance I was no longer obsessed by his work. I liked a few tracks over the following years such as Ashes to Ashes and Thursdays Child, but it wasnt until  1995 and Outside that I thought he’d returned into a space I enjoyed, so I returned to buying his albums and enjoying the material, but never to the same level as those early years.

When Blackstar was released two days ago on the 8th I was really hooked and thought he’d returned to what made him a hero for me. And sadly two days on we heard the news.

Thanks you David Bowie you were a massive part of my life.

My mum did an oil painting for me back in the day..she left out a bangle that was on his wrist because she didn’t think a man should wear such an item. It’s a good job she never saw my scrap books!

King Crimson Birmingham

King Crimson gig live at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. Went with Gerald, we had tickets in a high place so looking down on the gig.

I’ve been a fan for more years than I want to mention, but this is the first time I’ve seen them live. Goosebumps at the beginning and near the end is unusual for me, but those bumps, and the feeling associated, came.

Interesting set. They played some classics extremely well and amongst them were some of my all time favorites.  See set list below phot. 21st Century Schizoid Man was brilliant, although three full drum kits seemed a little excessive.
Before they came on a pre-recorded message from Mr Fripp went into detail about not using cameras or phones to record or photograph the gig. As a result I only saw one photo being taken, so a well behaved audience.

Jose Gonzales in Rome

A night at Laghetto di Villa Ada, Rome to see Jose Gonzales. Excellent gig, nightmare of a journey though. I’d read up how to get there by bus from the apartment in central Rome…which according to the web site was from a bus stop two streets away to take me to the park gates. When trying to buy a ticket I was told that there were no buses, so I grabbed a cab. The driver gave a card and said call him at the end and he’d come and pick me up.
He never came, and there were no buses. After several calls for cabs and none turning up (due I guess to the fact there was no fixed address to come to) it was looking like a night on a park bench or a very long walk! Fortunately after much persistence I finally got a cab turn up and take me back.

But back to the Gig. The venue was lovely a park on the outskirts of Rome, with several craft shops around the side of the stage selling interesting jewellery etc. And food stalls. Had a hamburger…and then the stage open air and a lovely Italian evening. Was great to be immersed in a crowd of happy Italians, all enjoying the ambience. Jose played a great set…simple light show, to go with the delicate music. Wonderful!

Mew at the Ritz

Danish alternative rock band, Mew, live at The Ritz in Manchester. This is the second gig this year where I’ve been stopped from taking photos. They probably would have taken the camera at the door (like they did at The Leadmill) when the bouncer asked to look in my bag…and then asked if my camera had interchangeable lenses. Of course I said no, even though I had two lenses in the bag he looked in. With  Gerald Garratty and  Phil Otter
